When faced with a large retail purchase or an unmanageable statement balance, converting the transaction into a Credit Card EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is far more economical than paying 42%+ revolving card interest. However, credit card EMI schemes come with processing fees, non-refundable 18% GST on interest, and potential foreclosure charges.

The FinToolkit Credit Card EMI Calculator computes your exact monthly instalment, total interest charges, 18% GST liability, and processing fees, allowing you to see the true cost of credit card financing.

How credit card EMI conversion works

Credit card EMIs are calculated on a reducing balance basis over 3 to 36-month tenures:

Monthly EMI = P × r × [ (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1) ]

Where:
• P = Converted purchase or statement balance (₹)
• r = Monthly interest rate (Annual Rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100, typically 13% to 18% p.a.)
• n = Tenure in months (3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, or 36)

Worked calculation example

Consider converting a ₹60,000 electronics purchase into a 12-month credit card EMI at an interest rate of 15.00% per annum, with a one-time bank processing fee of ₹199.

Cost Breakdown ComponentAmount
Converted transaction amount₹60,000
Annual interest rate15.00% p.a. (Reducing Balance)
Tenure12 months
Base monthly EMI₹5,415 / month
Total interest payable₹4,986
GST on interest @ 18%₹897
Total interest + GST outgo₹5,883
Bank processing fee + 18% GST (₹199 + ₹36)₹235
Total cost of the loan (Principal + All charges)₹66,118

Financing ₹60,000 over 12 months costs ₹6,118 in total charges (₹5,883 in interest and GST, plus ₹235 in processing charges). While significantly cheaper than revolving debt, the extra ₹6,118 cost represents roughly 10% of the item's purchase price.

The reality behind "No-Cost EMI" offers

Under RBI guidelines, banks are prohibited from offering zero-interest credit products. In a "No-Cost EMI" promotion, the merchant offers an upfront discount on the product equal to the interest the bank will charge. However:

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a purchase into EMI block my credit limit?

Yes. When an EMI is booked, your available credit limit is reduced by the entire transaction amount (₹60,000 in our example). As you repay each monthly EMI, your available credit limit is restored proportionally.

Can I foreclose a credit card EMI early?

Yes, but most banks charge a foreclosure fee (typically 2% to 3% plus 18% GST) on the outstanding principal balance. In addition, the upfront processing fee is non-refundable.

What is the difference between Merchant EMI and Statement EMI?

Merchant EMI is chosen at the merchant checkout point (e.g. on Amazon or an offline store) and often qualifies for brand discounts or subventions. Statement EMI converts an already billed statement balance via your banking app, typically at a standard bank rack rate (15% to 20%).
