Whether you are saving for a home down payment, funding a child's university education, or planning a sabbatical, vague savings targets rarely succeed. A goal planner works in reverse: you specify the exact rupee amount you need and your target timeline, and the calculator determines the precise monthly SIP required to achieve that goal.
The FinToolkit Goal Planner computes your required monthly investment, tracks the total out-of-pocket capital you will commit, and shows the portion of your final goal that will be funded entirely by compounding returns.
How reverse goal planning works
Standard SIP calculators compute the future value from a given monthly deposit. The Goal Planner uses the reverse annuity formula to calculate the required monthly cash flow (P) needed to reach a target Future Value (FV):
Where:
• FV = Target goal amount (₹)
• i = Monthly interest rate (Annual Return ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
• n = Total investment duration in months (Years × 12)
Worked goal planning example
Consider planning a higher education fund of ₹20,00,000 needed in 10 years, assuming a 12.00% annualised return in diversified equity mutual funds.
| Goal Parameter | Calculated Value |
|---|---|
| Target financial goal | ₹20,00,000 |
| Timeline to achieve goal | 10 years (120 months) |
| Expected annual return | 12.00% p.a. |
| Required monthly SIP | ₹8,608 / month |
| Total principal you will invest | ₹10,32,973 (₹8,608 × 120) |
| Growth funded by compounding returns | ₹9,67,027 (48.4% of goal) |
To reach ₹20 Lakh in 10 years, you need to invest ₹8,608 per month. Over the decade, your personal contributions total ₹10.3 Lakh, while compounding market growth funds the remaining ₹9.67 Lakh.
Structuring investments by goal horizon
- Short-term goals (under 3 years): Avoid volatile equity funds. Use liquid funds, short-duration debt mutual funds, or recurring deposits where capital preservation is guaranteed.
- Medium-term goals (3 to 5 years): Consider conservative hybrid or balanced advantage funds that generate 7% to 9% while dampening downside equity volatility.
- Long-term goals (5+ years): Allocate toward diversified equity mutual funds (flexi-cap, large-and-mid-cap, or index funds) where historical long-term returns of 10% to 12% help outpace inflation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I adjust my target goal amount for inflation?
Yes. If a college degree costs ₹20 Lakh today, that same degree will cost roughly ₹36 Lakh in 10 years at 6% inflation. Use our Inflation Calculator to determine the future rupee cost of your goal before entering it here.
What if my monthly budget is less than the required SIP?
You can start with a smaller monthly amount and utilize an annual step-up of 10% using our Step-Up SIP Calculator. Alternatively, you can extend your goal horizon by 1 to 2 years to lower the required monthly investment.
How often should I review my goal progress?
Review your goals once a year. Check whether your portfolio's actual returns match your assumed growth rate, rebalance asset allocations if needed, and increase your SIP if salary revisions permit.
