How much life insurance cover is truly enough? Relying on arbitrary multiples like "10 times salary" often leaves families with substantial home loans or young children under-protected. The Human Life Value (HLV) method, developed by insurance economists, provides the most mathematically defensible measure of your life insurance requirement.
The FinToolkit Life Insurance Coverage Calculator applies the HLV framework: it computes the present value of the net economic contribution you would make to your family over your remaining working career, subtracts your current income-generating assets, and determines the exact life cover you should purchase.
The Human Life Value (HLV) calculation method
HLV measures the economic loss your dependents would suffer if your earnings stopped today:
- Net annual family contribution: Your gross annual income minus your personal consumption, income taxes, and self-maintenance costs (the net surplus that actively supports your household):
Net Family Contribution = Annual Income − Personal Expenses & Taxes
- Present value of future earnings: The capital amount required today to replicate that annual family contribution across your remaining career years until retirement age, discounted at a safe real investment yield:
HLV = Net Family Contribution × [ (1 − (1 + r)−n) / r ]
Where r = Discount rate and n = Earning years left until retirement. - Net cover to purchase: Subtract existing income-producing financial assets (savings, mutual funds, existing life policies) from your HLV:
Life Cover to Buy = HLV − Existing Financial Assets
Worked HLV calculation example
Consider a 32-year-old professional earning ₹12,00,000 per year, spending ₹3,00,000 on personal expenses and taxes (leaving ₹9,00,000 for family support), planning to retire at age 60 (28 working years remaining), holding ₹10,00,000 in existing mutual fund investments, assuming a 7.00% discount rate.
| HLV Component | Parameter Value |
|---|---|
| Gross annual income | ₹12,00,000 |
| Less: Personal consumption & taxes | ₹3,00,000 |
| Annual financial contribution to family | ₹9,00,000 / year |
| Earning years left (Age 32 to 60) | 28 years |
| Discount rate | 7.00% p.a. |
| Gross Human Life Value (HLV) | ₹1,09,23,400 (Present Value of ₹9L for 28 yrs) |
| Less: Existing financial assets | −₹10,00,000 |
| Net life insurance cover you should buy | ₹99,23,400 (≈ ₹1.00 Crore) |
The economic value of this individual's remaining career to the family is ₹1.09 Crore. Factoring in ₹10 Lakh of existing savings, the family requires a pure term insurance policy of approximately ₹1.00 Crore to ensure complete financial continuity.
Why pure term insurance is the only practical HLV vehicle
Securing a ₹1 Crore sum assured through traditional endowment or money-back plans would require an annual premium of ₹6 Lakh to ₹8 Lakh—unaffordable for most households. A pure term insurance policy delivers the exact same ₹1 Crore cover for an annual premium of just ₹8,000 to ₹15,000, allowing the remaining surplus to be invested in wealth-building mutual funds.
Frequently asked questions
Does HLV decrease as I get older?
Yes. As you age, your remaining working years until retirement decline, reducing the future earnings that need replacement. Simultaneously, your personal investments and retirement savings grow, naturally lowering the net life insurance cover required.
Should homemakers have life insurance?
Yes. Although a homemaker may not earn a corporate salary, their contributions (childcare, household management, elderly care) have significant economic replacement value. Several Indian insurers now offer independent term insurance policies for homemakers.
Should I buy life insurance for my minor children?
No. Life insurance is designed to replace economic income lost upon the breadwinner's demise. Minor children do not have financial dependents, so purchasing life insurance on children is unnecessary. Instead, invest that capital directly into an equity mutual fund or Sukanya Samriddhi account.
