A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) allows you to withdraw a fixed sum of money from your accumulated mutual fund investments at regular intervals—typically monthly. It is widely used by retirees and independent earners to generate predictable cash flow while leaving the remaining portfolio invested to compound.
Unlike traditional fixed deposit interest payouts, an SWP allows you to control the exact withdrawal amount and benefits from tax-efficient capital gains treatment in India. The FinToolkit SWP Calculator projects your ending portfolio balance and tracks total cash withdrawn across your chosen horizon.
How a Systematic Withdrawal Plan works
In an SWP, each monthly withdrawal redeems fund units based on the prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV):
- Regular cash flow: The designated withdrawal amount is transferred directly to your bank account on your chosen date each month.
- Remaining balance compounds: The capital that remains in the fund continues to generate market returns.
- Sustainable withdrawal rate: If your annual withdrawal percentage is lower than the fund's growth rate, your capital continues to grow even as you take regular payouts. If your withdrawal rate exceeds the return rate, the principal balance gradually diminishes over time.
Worked SWP scenario
Consider an investor with a corpus of ₹20,00,000 invested in a hybrid mutual fund generating an estimated 8.00% annual return, withdrawing ₹15,000 per month over a 10-year period.
| SWP Parameter | Calculation / Value |
|---|---|
| Starting investment corpus | ₹20,00,000 |
| Monthly withdrawal amount | ₹15,00,000 / month (₹1,80,000 annually) |
| Initial annual withdrawal rate | 9.00% of starting corpus |
| Assumed annual fund return | 8.00% p.a. |
| Total cash withdrawn over 10 years | ₹18,00,000 (120 monthly payouts) |
| Remaining corpus balance | ₹16,95,090 |
Over 10 years, the investor withdrew ₹18,00,000 in monthly cash flow, yet still retains a closing balance of ₹16,95,090 because the remaining capital compounded at 8% throughout the decade.
Tax advantage of SWP over bank fixed deposits
When you earn interest on a bank FD, 100% of the interest is taxed annually at your highest slab rate (up to 30% plus cess). In an SWP, each monthly payout is treated as a partial redemption of mutual fund units, consisting of a principal component (tax-free) and a capital gain component:
- Only the capital gain portion of each withdrawal is taxable.
- For equity mutual funds held over 12 months, long-term capital gains enjoy a ₹1,25,000 annual exemption under Section 112A, with excess gains taxed at 12.5%.
- This makes an SWP significantly more tax-efficient than interest-bearing deposits for retirees in the 20% and 30% tax brackets.
Frequently asked questions
What is a safe withdrawal rate for retirement in India?
A safe withdrawal rate is typically between 4% and 6% of your initial corpus annually for a 25 to 30-year retirement horizon. A conservative withdrawal rate protects against market downturns and preserves capital long into retirement.
Can my SWP corpus run out completely?
Yes. If your monthly withdrawal rate is significantly higher than the fund's returns, or if the market experiences severe sustained drawdowns in the early years of withdrawal (sequence of returns risk), your corpus will deplete. Review your withdrawal amounts annually.
Can I modify or stop an SWP at any time?
Yes. Mutual fund houses allow you to increase, decrease, pause, or terminate an SWP mandate online without penalty.
Which mutual fund category is best suited for an SWP?
Balanced Advantage Funds (Dynamic Asset Allocation), Conservative Hybrid Funds, and Multi-Asset Allocation Funds are popular choices for SWPs because their balanced asset allocation limits drawdown volatility while generating steady returns.
