The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a flagship social security scheme launched by the Government of India to provide guaranteed lifelong pension security to workers, particularly in the unorganised sector. Administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), APY guarantees a fixed monthly pension ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 starting from the age of 60.
The FinToolkit APY Calculator computes your required monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly contribution based on your current age and chosen pension tier, and shows the guaranteed retirement corpus returned to your nominee.
Key statutory features of Atal Pension Yojana
- Eligibility age: Any Indian citizen between the ages of 18 and 40 years holding an active savings bank account. (Income taxpayers have been excluded from joining APY since October 2022).
- Guaranteed pension tiers: Subscribers can choose a fixed monthly pension of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000 per month payable for life from age 60.
- Triple benefit structure:
- To subscriber: Guaranteed monthly pension for life starting at age 60.
- To spouse: Upon subscriber's demise, the exact same monthly pension continues to the surviving spouse for life.
- To nominee: Upon the demise of both subscriber and spouse, the entire accumulated retirement corpus (up to ₹8.5 Lakh for a ₹5,000 pension) is returned to the nominee.
Worked contribution calculation example
Consider an individual who enrols in APY at age 30, selecting a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹3,000 per month starting at age 60 (30 years of contributions).
| APY Parameter | Statutory Value |
|---|---|
| Entry age / Pension start age | Age 30 / Age 60 (30 contribution years) |
| Target guaranteed monthly pension | ₹3,00,000 / month for life |
| Required monthly contribution | ₹342 / month |
| Equivalent quarterly contribution | ₹1,019 / quarter |
| Equivalent half-yearly contribution | ₹2,019 / half-year |
| Total capital contributed across 30 years | ₹1,23,192 (₹342 × 360 months) |
| Guaranteed corpus returned to nominee | ₹5,10,000 |
By contributing just ₹342 per month (roughly ₹11 per day) from age 30 to 60, total out-of-pocket contributions equal ₹1,23,192. In return, the subscriber receives ₹3,000 every month for life, followed by spouse pension, and ₹5,10,000 returned to the nominee.
Why joining early matters
Because compounding operates over longer horizons, joining at age 18 requires only ₹42/month for a ₹1,000 pension (or ₹210/month for ₹5,000). Joining at age 39 increases the required monthly contribution to ₹264/month for a ₹1,000 pension (or ₹1,318/month for ₹5,000)—more than six times higher.
Frequently asked questions
Can income taxpayers join APY?
As per Ministry of Finance notification, any citizen who is or has been an income taxpayer (under either the Old or New Regime) cannot join APY after 1 October 2022. If an income taxpayer joins, the account will be closed and only contributions refunded.
What happens if a monthly auto-debit fails?
Banks levy an overdue interest charge of ₹1 per month for contributions up to ₹100, up to ₹10 per month for contributions above ₹1,000. Ensure sufficient balance in your bank account on your scheduled debit date.
Can I increase or decrease my pension amount later?
Yes. Subscribers can upgrade or downgrade their pension tier once a year during the month of April by submitting a request to their bank branch.
