The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, long-term, defined-contribution retirement scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Open to all Indian citizens between the ages of 18 and 70, NPS invests across market-linked asset classes to build a substantial retirement nest egg and generate lifelong monthly pension income.
The FinToolkit NPS Calculator estimates your total corpus accumulation at age 60, models the mandatory 40% annuity purchase, and computes your expected monthly pension payout alongside the 60% tax-free lump-sum withdrawal.
How NPS retirement funds work at age 60
When an NPS Tier-1 account subscriber reaches the retirement age of 60, the accumulated corpus is handled under statutory PFRDA withdrawal rules:
- Tax-free lump sum (up to 60%): You can withdraw up to 60% of your accumulated corpus as a lump sum. Under Section 10(12A) of the Income-tax Act, this 60% lump-sum withdrawal is 100% exempt from income tax.
- Mandatory annuity purchase (at least 40%): A minimum of 40% of the corpus must be used to purchase an immediate annuity from an approved life insurance company (Annuity Service Provider / ASP). This annuity provides guaranteed monthly pension for life.
- Pension taxation: Monthly annuity pension received is treated as salary/income and taxed at your applicable income tax slab rate in the year of receipt.
Worked retirement calculation example
Consider an individual who joins NPS at age 30, investing ₹5,000 per month until age 60 (30 years of contributions), assuming an average annual portfolio return of 10.00% and an annuity interest rate of 6.00% p.a. on the mandatory 40% allocation.
| NPS Metric | Amount / Calculation |
|---|---|
| Monthly contribution | ₹5,000 / month |
| Investment duration | 30 years (from age 30 to 60) |
| Total principal contributed | ₹18,00,000 |
| Total accumulated corpus at age 60 | ₹1,13,96,627 |
| 60% Tax-Free Lump Sum Withdrawal | ₹68,37,976 (Completely Tax-Free) |
| 40% Mandatory Annuity Corpus | ₹45,58,651 |
| Estimated Lifelong Monthly Pension | ₹22,793 / month |
By contributing ₹5,000 each month, an out-of-pocket investment of ₹18 Lakh grows into a corpus exceeding ₹1.13 Crore, providing a ₹68.3 Lakh tax-free cash payout plus a monthly pension of nearly ₹22,800 for life.
Tax advantages of NPS under Old and New Regimes
- Section 80CCD(1): Employee contribution up to 10% of salary (or 20% of gross income for self-employed) deductible within the overall ₹1,50,000 limit under Section 80CCE (Old Regime only).
- Section 80CCD(1B): Exclusive additional deduction of up to ₹50,000 over and above the Section 80C limit (Old Regime only).
- Section 80CCD(2) — Available under the NEW REGIME: Employer contribution to an employee's NPS Tier-1 account is deductible up to 14% of Basic + DA for government and corporate employees under Section 115BAC. This makes employer NPS one of the few tax-saving deductions permitted in the default new tax regime.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between NPS Tier-1 and Tier-2 accounts?
Tier-1 is the primary retirement account with tax benefits and lock-in until age 60. Tier-2 is a voluntary savings account with no lock-in and unrestricted withdrawals, but it offers no tax deductions for private-sector subscribers.
Can I withdraw 100% of my NPS corpus at age 60?
Under PFRDA regulations, if your total accumulated corpus at age 60 is ₹5,00,000 or less, you are permitted to withdraw the entire amount as a 100% tax-free lump sum without purchasing an annuity.
What asset classes can I choose in NPS?
NPS allows you to invest across four asset classes: Equity (E, capped at 75% for private sector), Corporate Debt (C), Government Securities (G), and Alternative Assets (A, capped at 5%). You can select Auto Choice (lifecycle-based rebalancing) or Active Choice.
Can I continue NPS contributions beyond age 60?
Yes. Subscribers can defer annuity purchase and continue contributing up to age 75, allowing the corpus to compound further during early retirement.
