Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) is a sovereign small savings certificate issued by India Post and authorized public-sector banks. Originally launched to encourage long-term savings discipline among rural and semi-urban savers, it is widely utilized across India for its simplicity: it guarantees that your initial deposit will exactly double in value over a statutory holding period notified by the Ministry of Finance.
The FinToolkit KVP Calculator computes the exact doubling period in years and months, effective annualised compounding return (CAGR), and maturity proceeds for any deposit amount.
How Kisan Vikas Patra works
KVP operates on a fixed-tenure doubling mechanism:
- Guaranteed doubling: You deposit a lump sum, and the government guarantees that the maturity value will be exactly 200% of your deposit upon completion of the notified term.
- Doubling period & rate: At the current notified rate of 7.50% p.a., the statutory doubling period is 115 months (9 years and 7 months).
- No investment ceiling: Minimum investment is ₹1,000 (in multiples of ₹100), with no upper limit on the amount you can deposit.
- Sovereign guarantee: Backed 100% by the Government of India, carrying zero credit default risk.
Worked doubling calculation example
Consider an investment of ₹1,00,000 in Kisan Vikas Patra at the prevailing interest rate of 7.50% per annum:
| KVP Metric | Statutory Value |
|---|---|
| Initial deposit amount | ₹1,00,000 |
| Government notified interest rate | 7.50% p.a. (Compounded Annually) |
| Statutory doubling period | 115 months (9 years 7 months) |
| Interest earned | ₹1,00,000 (100% gain) |
| Guaranteed maturity proceeds | ₹2,00,000 |
| Effective annualised CAGR | 7.50% p.a. |
A deposit of ₹1,00,000 doubles to exactly ₹2,00,000 at 9 years and 7 months. If you deposit ₹5,00,000, the guaranteed maturity payout is ₹10,00,000.
Taxation rules for KVP
- No Section 80C deduction: Unlike NSC or PPF, initial deposits in KVP do not qualify for tax deductions under Section 80C.
- Taxable interest: Accrued interest is taxable annually as "Income from Other Sources" at your applicable slab rate.
- No TDS on maturity: India Post does not deduct TDS on the final maturity payment. However, investors must declare the interest income in their annual income tax returns.
