The National Savings Certificate (NSC VIII Issue) is a 5-year fixed-income small savings instrument backed by the Government of India. Available through India Post branches and participating public-sector banks, it offers complete sovereign security, guaranteed government-notified returns, and Section 80C tax deduction benefits under the old tax regime.

The FinToolkit NSC Calculator calculates your 5-year maturity value, total accrued interest, and interest earned per ₹1,000 invested based on current Ministry of Finance notified rates.

Statutory operational features of NSC

  1. Tenure & compounding: NSC has a fixed tenure of 5 years. Interest is compounded annually at the notified rate (currently 7.70% p.a.) and paid out as a lump sum upon maturity.
  2. Investment limits: Minimum investment is ₹1,000 (in multiples of ₹100). There is no maximum investment limit.
  3. Loan collateral: NSC certificates can be pledged or transferred as security collateral to commercial banks and housing finance institutions for securing credit facilities.

Who is eligible to purchase NSC?

Only resident Indian individuals (singly, jointly, or as guardians on behalf of minors) can purchase NSC. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), trusts, and companies are not eligible.
