The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) is a premier government-sponsored savings program designed to provide dependable, regular income to Indian retirees. Backed by the sovereign guarantee of the Central Government, it offers quarterly interest disbursements at a government-notified rate that consistently exceeds standard commercial bank fixed deposit rates.
The FinToolkit SCSS Calculator computes your exact quarterly pension payouts, annual income, cumulative interest over the 5-year tenure, and tax deductions available under Section 80C and Section 80TTB.
Statutory operational features of SCSS
- Eligibility age:
- Individuals aged 60 years and above.
- Retirees aged 55 to 60 years who have retired under a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) or superannuation, provided the account is opened within 1 month of receiving retirement benefits.
- Retired defence personnel aged 50 years and above.
- Maximum deposit limit: The statutory investment cap was enhanced in Budget 2023 to ₹30,00,000 per individual (₹60,00,000 for a couple opening separate accounts).
- Tenure & extension: 5-year initial tenure, which can be extended in blocks of 3 years indefinitely by submitting Form 4 within 1 year of maturity.
- Quarterly interest payout dates: Interest is paid automatically on the first working day of April, July, October, and January directly into your linked savings bank account.
Worked quarterly income example
Consider an individual investing ₹15,00,000 in SCSS at the notified interest rate of 8.20% per annum across the standard 5-year tenure.
| SCSS Metric | Amount / Calculation |
|---|---|
| Principal deposit amount | ₹15,00,000 |
| Notified interest rate | 8.20% p.a. |
| Quarterly interest payout | ₹30,750 / quarter (₹15L × 8.2% ÷ 4) |
| Equivalent monthly income | ₹10,250 / month |
| Total annual interest income | ₹1,23,000 / year |
| Total interest received over 5 years | ₹6,15,000 (20 quarterly payouts) |
| Maturity principal returned | ₹15,00,000 |
Investing ₹15 Lakh generates ₹30,750 every quarter (₹1,23,000 annually), totaling ₹6.15 Lakh in interest over 5 years while keeping the ₹15 Lakh principal completely protected.
Tax treatment under Old and New Regimes
- Initial deposit deduction: Qualifies for tax deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1,50,000 (under the Old Tax Regime).
- Interest taxation: Interest earned is taxable as "Income from Other Sources" at your slab rate.
- Section 80TTB benefit: Resident senior citizens can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹50,000 on total bank and postal interest under the Old Tax Regime.
- TDS threshold: TDS is deducted at 10% under Section 194A if total annual interest exceeds ₹50,000. Senior citizens whose total taxable income is below the basic exemption threshold can submit Form 15H to avoid TDS.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SCSS account be prematurely closed?
Yes. Premature closure is permitted after 1 year. If closed between 1 and 2 years, a penalty of 1.5% of the deposit is deducted. If closed after 2 years, a penalty of 1% is deducted. Under revised rules, premature closure after 4 years during an extended tenure incurs no interest penalty.
Can husband and wife both invest ₹30 Lakh?
Yes. The ₹30 Lakh limit applies to individual investors. If both spouses are eligible senior citizens, each can open an individual account, deploying up to ₹60 Lakh combined to generate ₹4,92,000 in annual household interest.
Can interest be accumulated rather than paid out quarterly?
No. SCSS is strictly an income-disbursement scheme. Interest is automatically credited to your savings account each quarter and cannot be compounded or reinvested within the scheme.
